Full read-write Claude connector for Microsoft Planner

Make Claude create tasks and update progress in Microsoft Planner

Stop clicking through plans and buckets to keep the board current. Claude creates tasks in the right plan, assigns them, moves them as work advances, and updates progress where the plan already lives, with closing actions waiting for your approval.

Microsoft Planner is Microsoft 365's task and project board tool, where teams organize work into plans, buckets, and assigned tasks. People want Claude to do more than read those boards: to create tasks, move them across buckets, and update assignments and progress.

What is a Microsoft Planner MCP server?

A Microsoft Planner MCP server is a small hosted service that exposes Microsoft Planner's data and actions to Claude over the Model Context Protocol, so Claude can tasks, projects, and docs inside your own account. We build it as a custom connector with separate read and write tools, and destructive actions stay gated behind your approval.

What can Microsoft Planner's current connector do today?

Today, Microsoft Planner has no first-party Claude connector, and any read access typically runs through broader Microsoft Graph integrations rather than a Planner-specific one. So Claude usually cannot create tasks, change buckets, or update progress on its own. A custom Planner connector adds those write actions with scoped, human-in-the-loop controls.

What does full read-write Microsoft Planner access unlock?

Full read-write Planner access lets Claude create tasks in the right plan and bucket, set due dates and assignees, update progress and checklist items, and move tasks across buckets as work advances. The board updates that used to mean clicking through Planner happen where the plan already lives.

  • Create a task in a specific plan and bucket with a title and due date
  • Assign or reassign a task to a team member
  • Move a task between buckets as it progresses
  • Update task progress to not started, in progress, or completed
  • Add or check off checklist items on a task
  • Set or update a task's due date and priority

Can Claude create and assign tasks in Microsoft Planner?

Yes. With a full read-write Planner connector, Claude creates a task in a chosen plan and bucket, sets its title, due date, and priority, and assigns it to a team member. Without a purpose-built connector Claude generally cannot write to Planner, since there is no first-party connector today.

Can Claude move tasks between buckets in Microsoft Planner?

Claude can move a task between buckets as it progresses and update its progress to not started, in progress, or completed. It can also add or check off checklist items. Moving and completing work are gated write actions, so Claude prepares the change and applies it only after you confirm.

Does the connector get more access than I have in Planner?

No. The connector authenticates as your Microsoft 365 account through OAuth and inherits your existing Planner permissions. Claude only sees the plans and tasks you can already see, and it never gains more access than you have yourself. Read tools and write tools stay separated throughout.

How a Microsoft Planner connector works

We build a small MCP server that authenticates to Microsoft Planner through Microsoft Graph with OAuth 2.0 and the narrowest scopes the work needs. Read tools (list plans, read tasks) and write tools (create, assign, move, complete) are separated, and actions that change or close out work are gated behind your confirmation. Claude never has more access than your own Microsoft 365 account already has.

Frequently asked questions

Can Claude create and assign tasks in Microsoft Planner, not just read the board?
Yes. A custom Planner connector exposes write tools that create a task in a chosen plan and bucket, set its due date, and assign it to a team member. Without a purpose-built connector Claude generally cannot write to Planner at all, since there is no first-party connector for it today.
Will Claude move or complete Planner tasks without my approval?
No. Moving a task between buckets and marking it complete are separate, gated write actions. Claude can propose the change and prepare it, but it only applies after you confirm. You decide which task updates happen automatically and which require a confirmation step.
Does the connector get more access to my plans than I have?
No. The connector authenticates as your Microsoft 365 account through OAuth and inherits your existing Planner permissions. It only sees the plans and tasks you can already see, and it never grants Claude more access than you have yourself.
